Organizational History
Selected Highlights

1992: Creation of the Task Force on Internal Medicine Women Faculty by the
Chair of the Department of Medicine (DOM; John Eisenberg, MD)
1993: Inequities of salary and rank reported by the DOM Task Force on
Internal Medicine Women Faculty to DOM chair; Salaries were adjusted
to resolve inequities.
1994: Formation of the Society for Medical Women Faculty, inclusive of the
entire School of Medicine
1994-2004: Discussions with GUMC administration about gender inequities in salary
1999: Successful financial settlement of gender inequity lawsuit by a group of
women GUMC basic science faculty
2000: Launched SWMF Website
2000: Creation of annual Mentorship Award and an annual reception honoring
recently promoted and/or tenured women
2001: Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs office created in response to SMWF
efforts to promote faculty development
2003: Recipient of national AAMC Women in Medicine Leadership
Development Award
2004: Newly created Committee on Faculty Affairs formed, with appointment of
a SWMF pat-president as it chair
2005: Name changed from SMWF to Georgetown Women in Medicine (GWIM)
